I got a postcard from LJ this week. She is having fun in California.
I volunteered yesterday and it went well. I showed a friend my pictures and I tested a program called Resume Maker. The program is easy to use and might be right for some people. It is good for agencies like the one I work at, because it uses 'fill in the blank' type questions and has a good wizard. This means that it is easy to get clients working with it and anyone can produce good results. Individuals would have to decide whether they needed a dedicated resume and letter writing program.
I have been testing photo organizers/editors at home. Most of the photo programs for Linux are way behind similar programs for Windows. I have difficulty finding programs to rival Irfanview in simplicity and power. I am making out with what I have.
One thing I hate about JPG files and Image Editing programs is 'metadata'. This extra information gets added to photos when you scan or manipulate (eg: crop and save) images. Whenever a program checks this metadata your old scanner info or image editor version is included. I hate it when a program lists my photos as 'Made by Picture Editor' (for example). Especially if all I did was rotate the image and save. Sometimes too much crap info is included with computer files.
I have been experimenting with Jalbum to create web albums. It is much like Picasa and Photoshop Album. These programs make fancy albums based on your pictures. I think I will stick to Digikam and similar programs that use simple html and a browser to view pictures. They make simpler files that are easy to customize.
As you can see I am seriously thinking about making my own web page for images. It will complement my flickr site and allow me to post images that aren't photos. I would use free space provided by my ISP. It is a project to putter with over the next few months.
