A Whitehorse Christmas

I spent Christmas with my family in Whitehorse. This was a special occasion for several reasons:

  • I haven't spent Christmas with them for years.

  • This is the first time in ages that my whole family was together.

  • I also got to see an Aunt and several cousins I haven't seen for years.

I left Victoria on December 16, in the morning, and arrived in Whitehorse in late afternoon. I went from this:

Sunrise came at 10:10 am and sunset at 3:53 pm. I felt like I was on another world for a day or two.

I went on several walks and was surprised to find that Whitehorse had changed a bit since I was last there. There were many murals and other pieces of art. I never did photograph all of them.

On the 23rd the temperature rose to 10.5C and the snow was melting all over. I went on a walk and saw an odd mix of snow, ice, water, and mud. Whitehorse's warm spell was mentioned on CBC TV.

Things changed on the 24th. Temperatures dropped to -16 C and the slush turned to ice. It was going to remain a 'White Christmas'.

On Christmas my brothers and their families (those in town) gathered for dinner. It was a nice time. On Boxing Day my Aunt and cousins came for supper. This was also a fun time.

I did my duty as an uncle and cousin. I lost at checkers to my 11 year old nephew and was out wrestled by my 12 year old cousin. My duty? Getting the kids worked up and then giving them back to the parents.

I was ready to come home on the 28th. It was still cold and my memory card was almost full.

I took over a hundred pictures and almost all of them turned out. The pictures are in a set called Whitehorse Christmas 2004. Select 'View as slideshow'. They will play in reverse order (for some reason).

I hope you have had as nice a holiday as I did.
