This past week I have been playing around with Xandros Desktop OS. I am using it for my day to day computing and leaving Windows for games. I finally am doing something instead of bitching about Windows while being dependent on it.
There has been an adjustment period as I try to duplicate things I learned to do in Windows. For example: Selecting and copying by right clicking. Sometimes this is problematic when different programs are involved. It is a pain but it can be in Windows also.
My Internet connection and email work fine. Again I deal with making a new program – Mozilla – work like Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
The only hardware that I can't use are either of my scanners. One is not supported and the other's driver is in development. I don't use a scanner much.
The only irritating kink in my plan so far has been that I can't access Diaryland from Mozilla. Xandros comes with v1.3 and that may be the problem. When I used Knoppix I could see my diary and the main Diaryland site. For now I will update Firemind from Windows.
Overall I am happy with the decision to get Xandros. It is fun to learn new things and the OS works fine.
Besides, I now have a silly animated penguin that walks all over my work.
