I have lived in historic places such as Whitehorse and Dawson City. Dawson has many preserved wooden buildings because it is a National Historic Site. Whitehorse, in contrast, has very few.
Compared to stone buildings (like those here in Victoria) these wooden buildings decay quite fast in some environments. Many buildings up north are too decrepit for preservation.
The other problem with wood is fire. Whitehorse used to have three sternwheelers dating from the Klondike Gold Rush. Two of them burned one day. It was a great loss.
That is one reason I like to photograph the old buildings here. They have survived.

I love Skagway! I went there in 1997 and, unusually for me considering its a small remote town, I wanted to move there!
What a great place! Your photos are wonderful!
What was it like living in the Yukon, Leon? I've always wanted to venture that way, not necessarily to live but just to experience and see before my time is up.
Despite the problems with the wood, they are amazing structures!
maktaaq - thanks. I have only been to Skagway twice, but it is interesting. I am not much of a small town person, but if i lived in one again it would have to have character.
Kim - Let me think a bit and write a brief post. While you are waiting check out 'Whitehorse' and "Dawson City' on Google.
Brent - You're right. I have seen some amazing homes here this week. Photos coming soon.
Vegasbaby - I have seen so many different building styles these last few weeks. The Victorian style we see so often here is neat. Later styles less so. I have seen some old and ugly prairie buildings that looked well built and permanebt but I have seen my share of 'shacks'.
That's one more time than me. The grammar is skewed in that last sentence, isn't it.
I am not really a small town person either. But I could see myself spending a month or two there.
