Book Review: Hard Love

Yes, it's hard love, but it's love all the same
Not the stuff of fantasy, but more than just a game
And the only kind of miracle that's worthy of the name
For the love that heals our lives is mostly hard love

Hard Love by Bob Franke

First loves can be so wonderful but they can also be painful. We remember our first loves for a long, long time.

Hard Love tells the story of a 16 year old guy named John who has trouble connecting with his feelings. He hasn't adapted well to his parents divorce and finds making friends difficult. He doesn't really appreciate his nerdy friend Brian. Since he mistrusts his feelings he doesn't know if he is gay, or straight, or "neuter".

John seems to drift through life until he falls in love with a lesbian. Then things get complicated.

Hard Love is a very good 'Young Adult' novel. It is well written and quite funny at times. It is also a very sad story at times. I bought the book in the afternoon a few days ago. I finished it the next morning around 4 a.m.

I recommend this book to anyone wanting a good story that will make them think. I especially recommend it to teenagers (who will identify with the themes).
